Fire: February 6 (One Picture Book #13) documents one of the artist’s home town celebrations, the annual Shingu Fire Festival. Gathered at night in the Kannokura shrine, high in the mountains, the participants kindle a single flame, from which each light pine torches. En masse, they descend the stone steps, creating a river of fire in the evening sky. The sacred torches are then taken to each home in the community and used to rekindle fires, signifying regeneration as the winter draws to a close. Risaku Suzuki is one of Japan’s most prominent young photographers. His work has been published widely in Japan, and has been exhibited in Asia, Europe and the United States. Suzuki’s photographs are included in the travelling exhibition “The History of Japanese Photography” organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Fire: February 6 is the first Western publication devoted exclusively to his work. As part of our One Picture Book series, it is limited to 500 signed copies, each of which includes an original photograph.
